This dialogue is becoming a very common one in Trinidad and Tobago. All too often when we
speak to secondary school students (and sometimes undergraduate students) they tell us that they do not enjoy studying
History and it's one of their most boring subjects!
We, the organisers of the Young Historians' Association of Trinidad and Tobago decided
that it is time to do something to curb this attitude to the study of History. As young historians we think it is our
obligation (if not duty) to bring History to life in the classrooms.
We have a vision: to make the study of the History so interesting, that
students will enjoy the subject in schools; that individuals will be interesting in learning about the history of Trinidad
and Tobago.
We recognise that the study of history is important
to us in many ways.
- It helps us understand how we got to where we are now.
- It helps us to make sense of a time different from our own time.
- It aids us in placing our own times in perspective.
We recognise that Trinbagonians share a rich cultural heritage which
we can better understand through a study our History.
We recognise that a deeper knowledge of our historical past will facilitate an appreciation of all cultures
and ethnic groups in Trinidad and Tobago.
